MARN's Collecting 101 Series
How often have you gone to gallery night or walked into your favorite gallery and wanted to buy a piece of work but didn’t? Why not? If you’re like many people you think buying art is only for the super rich or for some reason you don’t feel up to the responsibility of owning artwork.
Well, as witnessed by MAM’s recent arrival from the Vogel collection we know you don’t need to be super rich to collect. But how do you do it? And once you start how do you take care of those pieces?
The Milwaukee Artist Resource Network’s new series on collecting is aimed at taking some of the mystery out of the process of buying and owning art. This series will provide insight from average everyday folks who started collecting as well as gallery owners and artists themselves. The collectors will address how they got started collecting while the other experts will talk about the care and feeding if you will of various types of work.
This series is produced as a partnership between MARN and the Humphrey Scottish Rite Center. The series will be presented the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 at the Humphrey Scottish Rite Center in the Walter Schreoeder Lounge 790 N. Van Buren Each lecture is $10.00 with proceeds benefiting MARN and the Humphrey Center

Evelyn Terry: Stories of Collecting from Your Community
“I bought my first piece of art from a student at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design from a student exhibition maybe in 1973. I don't quite remember. I don't know the artists at all. I think I was a student and it took me almost a year to pay the $50 bill. It was a framed very realistically pencil-drawn rendering. I've looked at it for years and still enjoy it. I collect from different artists around me, mostly African American. Some artists from other cultures, I do not know at all. All of the work that I have is because I had the money the day that the work was available.“
Evelyn Patricia Terry began writing a manuscript on African-American artists connected to Wisconsin entitled Permission to Paint, Please! in 1997. The manuscript is contracted to be published by the University of Wisconsin Press. Terry has an international exhibition record. Over 400 corporations and private patrons, including three Wisconsin museums, have collected her art. A resident artist at Lincoln Center of the Art she has a BFA and MS from University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Elaine Erickson: Collecting Prints
Elaine Erickson owns the Elaine Erickson Gallery which is a member of the Milwaukee Art Dealers Association. Established in 1994 in suburban Milwaukee, originally under the name Studio 613 Fine Arts the gallery is now located in the city's Third Ward Arts District just south of downtown. The Elaine Erickson Gallery represents artists from around the world as well as some of Milwaukee’s top talent.

Ken & Melinda Krei: Collecting Work you Like (without a degree in Art History!)
Melinda Scott Krei is a social science researcher and policy consultant specializing in issues of access and equity for underserved youth. A graduate of Columbia University with a Ph. D. in politics and education, Melinda also earned degrees at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, and at the University of Memphis. Melinda serves on the boards of the Citizen Action Education Fund and the Donor Collaborative of Wisconsin. She is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Wisconsin Foundation for Independent Colleges and the Executive Committee of College Readiness 21, and serves on the Session of Immanuel Presbyterian Church. An officer of the Executive Committee of the Board of McCormick Theological Seminary in Hyde Park, an institution that focuses on ecumenical, cross-cultural, and urban issues, Melinda chairs the Educational Policy and Program Committee. Melinda, a native of Tennessee, is married to Ken Krei and has a 24-year old son, Andrew.
Melinda developed into an avid museum goer when she lived within walking distance of both the Whitney and the Metropolitan Museum in NYC.

Richard Taylor with Tim and Sue Frautschi: Collecting Sculpture
Richard Taylor works out of a studio in Milwaukee's Riverwest. He shows his work across the country in several galleries from New York to California. His work explores the past and celebrates the future in small indoor meditations and large outdoor sculptures.
The lecture will be a sampling of his work, stories and examples of various commissions, both public and private. The methods and materials of metal fabricated sculpture will also be discussed.
The Frautschi’s have commissioned a number of pieces of artwork, including one by Richard Taylor, and have a fabulous and growing art collection.

Robert Smith: Collecting Photography
Robert Lewis Smith is an award-winning photographer who lives in Milwaukee. Smith discovered the joy of photography as a young boy. A free-lance photographer, Smith was also a long time faculty member of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Smith’s personal projects concentrate on family and on the landscape. Smith’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and is included in the collection of the Milwaukee Art Museum and in those of numerous private collectors.

Each year MARN pairs established artists with emerging artists to work together over a period of 9 months. At the end of this stretch MARN presents an exhibition of the Mentors' and their Protegees' work.
This year MARNmentors is proud to present this exhibition in partnership with the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design.
In addition to the always-spectacular visual art that has historically come out of this program MARN has added filmmakers, literary artists, and composers to the mix this year.
MARNmentors is made possible through grants from the Wisconsin Arts Board, the Milwaukee Arts Board, and the generous support of MARN's artist and patron members.

David Barnett: Collecting Paintings
David’s career as an art dealer began at age nineteen, when as a Fine Art and Art History student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he sponsored an exhibition of work by fellow student artists. In 1966, he opened his first gallery at Wisconsin Avenue and 21st Street in Milwaukee. The original mission of the gallery was to sponsor emerging new artists from the Milwaukee area. However, in 1968, the gallery branched out to feature European and American Masters. What started out as a modest collection 41 years ago has developed into a diverse, international collection of more than 5,000 artworks. The gallery moved into its present location in 1985. David’s talent for recognizing artwork of value and for meeting the needs of art lovers, collectors, and
artists has created a vibrant, flourishing gallery and collection.
